Philadelphia Firefighters
and Paramedics Will March on City Hall

On Tuesday June 29, 2004 at 11:20 AM, Philadelphia Firefighters and Paramedics will march from their Union Hall at 5th and Willow to the west side of City Hall where they will hold a rally at 12:00 noon on Dilworth Plaza. There they will protest against the proposed closings of eight fire companies. In attendance will be: Harold Schaitberger, General President of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Thomas P. O’Drain, President Philadelphia Fire Fighters’ Union, IAFF Local 22, Patrick J. Eiding, President Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO, and many City, State and National political officials.

It is the fire fighters’ position that planned company-closures will unreasonably jeopardize the health and safety of its members and the general public if implemented in the manner sought by the City.  The City has decided to make these cuts without any independent expert scientific study! The fire fighter’s asked for proof that these drastic changes would not impact fire fighter safety in March and still have nor received any answer from the City. The City touts that it is adding Medic Units, but they are not telling the public that these units will only be in service twelve hours a day or that the deployment of these units still does not fulfill a decades old recommendation for fifty full-time ambulances.

The City says that companies are being closed not stations. They are hoping that the public is not smart enough to know the capabilities of the remaining apparatus in their fire station. As long as they see a truck there it is alright, but is that in the best interest of the community? The City will not tell the truth: that it will leave taxpayers waiting for a Ladder or Engine company coming from further away. This will lead to a delay in fire suppression activities and a greater chance for loss of life and property.
